Bob was chairman of the IEE Software Engineering Professional Group during the mid-eighties, then a founder member of the Institution’s Information Engineering Committee. Upon completion of his role as Director of the IEE-BCS Study of Safety-Related Systems, he became a founder member of the IEE Safety Critical Systems Committee.
During the early nineties Bob played a leading role in the Computing Systems Professionals initiative of the Institution, which investigated the ways in which a professional institution could encourage and support professionalism in this increasingly important sector of the economy and society. This culminated in the formation in 1997 of the Informatics Division of the IEE, with an estimated membership of 25,000. Bob was elected its inaugural chairman.
